feedback for qn 6

6. What are the similarities and/or differences between Old Major’s speech and what is really going on in the farm?

There are differences between Old Major’s speech and what is really going on in the farm. Such as the pigs went against the commandments that Old Major said. (perhaps it would be good to give a brief summary of Old Major's speech in the intro, and then state that there are differences)

Old major said in his speech that if the animals got rid of man the produce of their labour would be their own. He also said that if man was to be removed the root cause of hunger and overwork would be abolished. But even after the rebellion has occurred and Jones is expelled the produce of the animals labour went to the pigs. This can be seen when the pigs took away the cows’ milk and the apples (the animals initially thought that these would be shared out equally) and when the animals did not have enough food the pigs had more than enough food for themselves and continued to take away their food. To feed themselves the animals instead were overworked (a quote or two would be good).

Old major stated that the animals would be sent to the knackers once they are of no use when humans are in control. But even after Jones was expelled the pigs sent Boxer to the knackers because he was of no use. (a little more elaboration would be good - e.g. the pigs have no compassion and value for life, since they are only interested in his labour, which benefits them and the farm. They show how cruel and heartless they are when they send him to be slaughtered the minute he is not useful).

Old Major said in his speech that whatever that goes upon two legs is an enemy expect for the birds. The pigs in the last chapter walk on two legs but they still remain as the leaders of the animals. (again more elaboration)

Old Major had listed the commandments and every one of them has been broken showing a big difference. He had said that no any shall live in a house, sleep in a bed, wear clothes, drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, touch money or engage in trade (this listing of commandments here is ok). All have been broken. The pigs live in the farmhouse and sleep in beds. In the last chapter Napoleon wears clothes and smokes tobacco. All the pigs have also drunk alcohol. (One suggestion: you could discuss in detail when and how the pigs go against 2-3 commandments, and how they modify them - this would give your answers more depth)

There were also other commandments that old Major said that were broken. He said that no animal shall tyrannize over his own kind but the pigs overworked the animals and carried whips to threaten them. He also said that no animal should kill another but the dogs that were commanded by Napoleon had killed some of the animals (when and why?). Most importantly he said all animals are equal but the pigs had raised themselves to a much higher position then the other animals (evidence?).

In conclusion there is much difference of what old major said in his speech and what was going on in the farm. The commandments were broken and what Old major wanted was not achieved (you have not really stated clearly what Old Major wanted).

Fairly good. I feel that the following point has to be covered, because freedom is the main message Old Major is tryign to put across to the animals so your essay has to deal with it.

Old Major wanted the animals to have freedom and be free of exploitation by Man. He said that if the animals rebelled, they would be free of all the injustices they face now (like what you have mentioned above - having their young taken away from them, given enough food just to barely survive, etc), and have a better live, which is more in their control. However, this is not what is really happening in the farm. Despite rebelling to get freedom, the animals do not get any freedom. They are still slaves, but this time, to the pigs instead of to humans, although they think they are running their own farm and lives. In fact, their living conditions have not improved at all (any specific references/quotes would be good).
