9. Deception is a major theme in animal farm. Discuss with reference to specific events/incidents in the novel.
The pigs make use of Squealer to distort the truth about what is happened to the animals. The animals believe that they have more food, lead better lives than during Jones' time and desperately cling onto the lie that they are their own masters. This is the part of the pigs' deception, to make the animals think that they're free, when in reality, the animals are slaves to the pigs.
Squealer routinely beguiles the animals to accept the priviledges enjoyed by the pigs and dogs. He assures them that the pigs work very hard and that their job is far too complicated for the animals to understand. He also adds that the pigs are the masterminds and if they failed in their duties, Jones would surely come back. (A good example to to discuss in some detail here would be the milk and apples incident) An example of this is "minutes" and "memoranda" which must be written down and then burnt, for "the welfare of the farm" which is totally untrue.
As the animals are too gullible to understand, they accept the pigs' behaviour without any complains. The Seven Commandments are constantly changed to conform with the behaviour of the pigs, and thus to justify it (specific examples? Discuss 1 or 2 instances whereby the pigs change the commandments and how they deceive the animals. You must also highlight that Squealer deceives the animals into thinking that they have forgotten the commandments, or that they have remembered it wrongly).
The animals are deceived to the extent that they cannot remember how life was like before under Jones' rule (lacks elaboration and substantiation. How do we know this? Evidence?).
The ending of the story describes how the pigs have finally come out into the open with their cruelty and openly proclaimed themselves as masters. (So what are you trying to say here? That they don't even need to use deception anymore? Be more explicit) This is the end of deception as the animals are too scared and cowed to do anything at this point in time.
History has taken one full circle. (interesting comment to make at the conclusion. It would be necessary to explain why you say this though)
Other points you should include:
- Napoleon and Squealer deceive the animals and distort the truth saying that Snowball is on Jone's side. Also, thery scapegoat Snowball and make all the animals believe that Snowball is the cause of all the bad things happening on the farm. Why do you think they do this? What purpose does it serve?
